Henry Hartman Obituary

Henry Lamar Hartman, 96, of Irving, IL passed  away on Monday, July 8, 2019, at 8:00 a.m. at Montgomery Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Taylor Springs, IL.  Visitation will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL.  Burial will take place in Irving, Cemetery, Irving, IL.  Pastor Nick Geisert, Pastor of Owensville Christian Church, Owensville, MO, will officiate.  Military rites will be accorded by V.F.W. Post 1306 and American Legion Post 425.

Mr. Hartman was born on July 7, 1923, in Irving, IL, to the late Henry T. and Ida (Franklin) Hartman.  He was a 1940 graduate of Irving High School, Irving, IL, joining the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, shortly after graduation.  He arrived at Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941, the day before the Japanese attack, and served on the USS Selfridge, a destroyer.  During his naval service, he was also in the Guadalcanal invasion and was at Tinian when the war ended.  He was discharged in 1946.  He married Hester Ann Morehead on April 15, 1946 in Mayfield, KY.  She preceded him on May 16, 2005.  He retired from Phillips Petroleum Company and served as a village trustee in his hometown of Irving, IL.  He lived in Indiana, Texas, Alabama, and Irving, IL, where he spent most of his life.  He established and maintained the Irving Museum and was involved in  the restoration of McCord Cemetery.  In 2002, he was honored with The Illinois Humanities Council Studs Terkel Humanitarian Service Award.  He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Hillsboro Educational Foundation.  He was Chairman of the Irving Are Historical Board of Directors, Irving, IL; a member of Christian Church of Witt, Witt, IL; member of American Legion Post No. 425 Irving, Irving, IL; member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association; and recipient of Irving Lodge No. 455, A.F. & A.M. Community Builders Award.

Mr. Hartman is survived by his children, Marianne Owens of Irving, IL, Jeff (wife Theresa) Hartman of Colleyville, TX, and Barry (wife Kathy) Hartman of Moweaqua, IL; seven grandchildren, Mikel Hartman, Laura (husband John) Gregory, Philip (wife Nikki) Hartman, Randy Hartman, Christy (husband Chris) Kriletich, James (wife Jennifer) Owens, and Angela (husband Mike) Ball; 14 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Zackary, Brody, Katie, Andrew, EJ, Kaylynn, Elisa, Henry, Grace, Corbin, Caitlyn, Jacob, and Ella; two great-great-grandchildren, Gabby and Riley; a sister, Pat Roberson of Henderson, NV; and Rhonda Rhodes and daughter, Josie of Irving, IL.

Mr. Hartman was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Hartman; a granddaughter, Lisa; and by brothers and sisters, Sylvia Lyerla, Melvina Kessler, Thomas Hartman, James Hartman, and Russell Hartman.
